The case regarding the gruesome murder of Johan Pretorius, 46, took a shocking turn after a friend of the farmer surrendered himself to the police in connection with the murder.

Police spokesperson Sgt. Neliswa Dwaba confirmed that Adam Lukas van Staden, 21, from Nigel, surrendered to police on Friday after being questioned about the murder of Johan Pretorius.

According to Dwaba, Van Staden also made a confession and appeared in court on Monday on a charge of murder. The case was postponed for further investigation, and he is remanded in custody.

Johan’s body was found next to his bakkie at the farm gate of his father-in-law, Daan Wessels, in the Nigel area on the East Rand on the evening of the 20th of June. Johan and his wife, Kobie, lived in a house on the farm. Shortly before 20:00 reports were received t

hat a bakkie was burning on the farm and that a body was found next to it. There were splashes of blood against the farm gate, which had been tied with wire. Two pieces of a pickaxe were also found at the scene. One part of the axe was found near the gate, and the other part further away. The burnt bakkie’s door was open, and glasses and a shoe were found lying on the ground in front of it.
Johan was beaten with the pickaxe and placed in the bakkie before setting it on fire. He was possibly unconscious and later regained consciousness trying to get out of the vehicle.
Kobie was not far from the gate of the farmhouse when her husband was attacked. Earlier that evening, she called her

father to say that the veld was burning near the house and that her husband was not home yet.
Kobie said on Tuesday morning that she was shocked by Van Staden’s alleged involvement in her husband’s murder.

She described him as a friend of hers and Johan’s, and said he regularly helped out on the farm.
