Isaac Cruz had a challenging night but secured a split decision victory over Giovanni Cabrera on the Spence vs. Crawford undercard.
The official scores were 114-113 for Cabrera and 114-113 and 115-112 for Cruz. who had a point deducted in the eighth round for headbutting.
It’s often said that styles make fights, and this bout was an example where the contrasting styles resulted in a strange and often frustrating contest. Despite this, Cruz seemed to land the cleaner, more effective shots throughout. Cabrera (21-1, 7 KO) fought as expected, utilizing his reach and height to keep distance and avoid trading punches with Cruz. However, his lack of power prevented him from gaining any significant momentum.
Cruz (25-2-1, 17 KO) discovered just how tough Cabrera’s chin is, as Cabrera absorbed several clean shots without much trouble.
“I don’t think he landed any punches, but the judges make the decisions,” Cruz said about the scoring. “We were better tonight, but I respect all my opponents, and he fought well today.”
Cruz also mentioned his frustration with Cabrera’s clinching, joking, “I think he thought it was my birthday with how many hugs he gave me during the fight.”
When asked about a potential fight with Ryan Garcia, who competes in a higher weight class, Cruz responded, “If the fans want it and his team is willing to come over to (PBC) and make it happen, I’m ready.
