Watch: ANC members ‘flip tables, act violently’ in chaotic council meeting

The DA says it will push for the arrest of several ANC councillors who were accused of bringing a Theewaterskloof Municipality meeting into disrepute. While trying to confirm the new government, as per the results of the 2021 Elections, it’s alleged that members of the party reacted violently when proceedings got underway.

DA DEMAND RECOURSE FOR ANC MEMBERS ‘EXACTING VIOLENCE’

Cilliers Brink, an MP and spokesperson for the DA, has publicly stated that some ANC councillors were guilty of ‘physically attacking’ one of their EFF counterparts. A local journalist also described the meeting as ‘one that descended into a wrestling match’ – and Brink has compelled law enforcement officials to take swift action.

“The DA condemns the ANC’s desperate and violent attempts to collapse council meetings. This behaviour is unacceptable, and in the case of Theewaterskloof’s inaugural council meeting today, has allegedly led to criminal assault.”

“ANC councillors were seen turning over tables and allegedly physically attacking an EFF councillor when it became clear that she would not vote in support of them. The DA calls for the immediate arrest of all the ANC councillors involved in this abhorrent display of violence and for them to be charged.”

The DA is insistent that the ANC turned up to the council meeting with the sole intention of collapsing proceedings. The Blues are in a position of power via coalition agreements, after winning 41.67% of the vote in Theewaterskloof. However, the scenes witnessed on Thursday do not reflect what we want to see from our elected representatives…
