Social distancing for what, and for who? South Africans are making the most of their final day before lockdown, as thousands head to the shops on Thursday. For many, this is the last chance to purchase booze and cigarettes before we’re confined to our homes – but stores will stay open, selling essential goods.

Shoppers have been warned against panic-buying, but some still continue to stockpile. Makro, once again, have been affected by the chaos. Long queues and stockpiling were evident at some of their branches, and despite their best efforts to enforce social distancing, a number of citizens continued to flout the rules:

Makro have since issued a statement on the matter, explaining what they are doing to mitigate the spread of the disease and ensure that shoppers behave in an orderly fashion:

“The queues both in store and outside are being constantly managed and monitored and we are limiting the amount of people inside the store to ensure social distancing guidelines are followed.”
